Making data understandable - this is the research goal of Prof. Dr. Fabian Beck. For his outstanding contributions to visualization research, the assistant professor of the Software Engineering Institute paluno at the University of Duisburg-Essen has been awarded the EuroVis Young Researcher Award 2018 this week.

Whether in the Internet, in the car, or in building technology - algorithms are an indispensable part of our lives. Fully automatically and in the shortest possible time, they process information and derive decisions from it. But how they do that often remains opaque. In contrast to computers, it is difficult for us humans to read complex relationships from data. Visualizations, on the other hand, are better suited to our information processing abilities - provided that they have an understandable form. Fabian Beck's research explores fundamental aspects and practical applications of data visualization. For example, he examines how visualizations can help software developers to better understand and change programs. In another project, his team analyzes eye tracking data to improve the usability of software applications. With the newly created EuroVis Young Researcher Award, Fabian Beck gets honored for his contributions to visualization research in his still young career since 2008. Already during his doctoral studies at the University of Trier, visualization played an important role. Later he deepened his research as a research assistant at the University of Stuttgart Visualization Research Center. Since 2016, he has headed the paluno research group for visualization.
